Context

Problem

Start-up investing has a high barrier to entry. There is no easy way for young people to invest in their peers’ start-ups because it’s usually limited to accredited investors. Gen-Z is looking to alternative forms of investing.

Opportunity

With Reg CF Title III 2021 Amendments, founders can now raise up to $5M in one year(24). As such, Launchparty has a unique opportunity to fill a market gap and build a platform that allows founders to raise money from their community and peers.

Goals

Reduce the friction for founders to raise money for their start up. Reduce the friction for investors to discover and invest in start-ups within their community.

DESIGN APPROACH

Visual Identity and Design System

The brand had an initial color scheme, but was not broad enough for accessibility and interaction design flexibility. I created a design system from Material Design M3. Establishing a design system is a critical step as it has a cascading effect on design decisions moving forward. The guidelines dictate the overall look and feel of our high-fidelity prototyping and mockups.

Research

Competitor Evaluation

To begin our research, we surveyed various investment and crowdfunding platforms to gain insights on their investment flows and user dashboards. Our goal was to observe how they conveyed critical information and educated their users on intricate topics.

After analyzing the data, we discovered that investor dashboards are designed to be straightforward, easily comprehensible, and informative. Furthermore, we learned that assets need to be discoverable, and competitors typically minimize the number of steps it takes for users to invest. We also realized that start-up investing can be daunting, with industry jargon and complexity creating an unsettling feeling for users.

Usability Testing

Discovering a painpoint

Through usability interviews, we uncovered that participants main concern in start-up investing was their lack of knowledge in investing. Users lacked knowledge on specific finance jargon. This informed us that we needed teach our users the critical finance knowledge so that they have the ability to make and informed investment decision.

Features

Quick Definitions

Saving time
Instead of searching for a detailed definition, a quick definition can save users time by providing a brief explanation that is easy to understand.
Enhancing learning
Quick definitions can be used as a starting point for deeper learning, helping users to build their knowledge and understanding of a topic over time.

Cards

We found that cards are a concise and clear way to silo information. They are scannable, easily digested, and appealing to look at.
